In a context of chronic insecurity, dynamic changes and acute shocks, our country program is working to support girls, boys and their families with the structures, strategies and resources needed to face chronic vulnerability, seasonal stresses and acute shocks.

Scope and Objectives

Kaizen is recruiting a Communications Officer for a USAID-funded Resilience Food Security Activity in Niger under the Wadata program, implemented by Save the Children and its consortium of partners, of which Kaizen is part. The goal is to improve food and nutrition security and resilience among extremely poor and chronically vulnerable households and communities in a sustainable manner. 

The program is a highly integrated, multi-sectoral food security intervention.  The Communications Officer will work with the Strategic Learning Advisor to capture lessons learned and develop knowledge products, including one-pagers, infographics, tools, and templates to disseminate information and integrate knowledge into new tools and processes for project operations in support of the collaborating, learning and adapting (CLA) framework. The Communications Officer will also support the development of project reports and other deliverables.  

Reports to: Strategic Learning Advisor


  • Develop, maintain and update an appropriate work plan, which implements the branding and marking plan, in order to maintain and enhance the visibility and reputation of USAID and partners within Wadata consortium
  • Produce reports, one-pagers, infographics, success stories, communications toolkits, quarterly e-newsletter and contribute to project deliverables
  • Generate and/or facilitate the production of donor specific visibility content including, text, photos, videos and audio for use across a range of integrated online platforms, in order to support donor visibility activities, ensuring consistency with corporate messages
  • Ensure that communications products, achievements, lessons learned, best practices are shared with internal staff and external partners, stakeholders, USAID, Government of Niger, and the general public, including in local languages
  • Synthesize information from interviews and discussions with stakeholders at all levels into digestible formats to facilitate knowledge sharing and lessons learned
  • Support communications activities to other team projects as required for field and Niamey offices
  • Contribute to overall CLA efforts by championing the cause at all times, be a part of the culture of change, and uphold the principles of CLA (open, good listener, willing to take risks, and observant)
  • Assist in planning, setting up, and running workshops, mini round tables, “pause and reflect” sessions, acting as notetaker, audio-visual assistance (projectors, presentation manager, microphones, audio/video taping), welcome table sign-up, distribution of materials, etc.
  • Support in documenting changes to activity scope based on CLA learning in the field on a regular basis
  • Manage online digital content, social media platforms
  • Maintain and develop a contact list of journalists and media outlets, and manage the regular flow of news/information about Wadata’s work to the media, ensuring reputational risks are identified and managed
  • Monitor and analyze global and national media channels and disseminate key information, capture program coverage in the press
  • Photograph project activities in the field, at events, workshops, etc.; possible videography and video production
  • Build capacity of Wadata staff on all aspects of external communication, providing advice, guidance and training to ensure consistent, quality communications activities that deliver the desired impact
  • Work in close collaboration with SCC counterparts to ensure Wadata’s contribution is captured within RISE 2 communication activities,
  • Other activities as required

Qualifications and Experience

  • Master’s degree and at least three years of experience (or Bachelor’s degree and at least five years of experience) in the field of communications, including communications mapping, social media platforms, and knowledge management
  • Proven experience in project management and planning team deliverables
  • Outstanding communication skills (verbal and written) with a proven ability to distill complex information and materials into digestible and inspiring messages catering to various audiences in English or French or a local language
  • Excellent organizational skills; demonstrable ability to manage a large workload in a pressured environment, working to short- and long-term objectives and tight deadlines.
  • Attention to detail and ability to follow tasks and ideas through to completion
  • A high degree of flexibility and adaptability in order to respond to changing needs
  • Strong interpersonal skills, a proven ability to establish and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders at all levels and across cultures
  • Photography ability using digital cameras, editing and manipulating photos a plus
  • Experience with geographic mapping system (GIS) is a plus
  • Competency in Microsoft Office, including Excel required; knowledge of Adobe Illustrator a plus; familiarity in layout design desirable (Adobe InDesign)
  • Previous experience working with USAID or other international donors is a plus
  • Advanced proficiency in English and French required
  • This position will be based in Zinder but will involve substantial travel to Gouré, and Damagaram Takaya districts and villages in the communes, and Niamey
  • This position is open to Nigerien nationals only
